Olive oil, eggs improves vision (page2)

AMD is a degenerative retinal disease that causes central vision loss and leaves only peripheral vision. Early detection is said to be a means of prevention so that treatment or rehabilitation can be undertaken early enough. However, links to diet have been emphasized. The many health benefits of olive oil is attributed to hydroxytyrosol, an antioxidant compound believed to play a significant role in the many health benefits attributed to olive oil. Previous research by a team from the University of Barcelona found that LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol levels might be reduced substantially after consuming just 25 millilitres of virgin olive oil daily for one week. Other studies have suggested that it could also protect against cancer.


A number of diet-based compounds concentrated in the retina may have the capacity to alter exogenous and endogenous defense and repair systems in response to oxidative stress and inflammation. The nutrients include lutein and zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids, provitamin A carotenoids, vitamin A, retinol, alpha-tocopherol and vitamin C.


Supplementing with carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin was associated with a lower risk for age-related macular degeneration, according to another report. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in leafy green vegetables, corn, egg yolks, squash, broccoli and peas. The carotenoids are believed to reduce the risk of AMD by absorbing blue light that could damage the macula,(................................) by preventing free radicals from damaging eye cells and by strengthening eye cell membranes.
