Hallucination may be due to excessive coffee intake




There are increasing evidences indicating that the amount of coffee one consumes may directly determine if one would end up with its adverse effects like nervousness, anxiety, headaches and heart palpitations. But the newest of these side effects of coffee that experts are warning against is hallucination

Are you the type that takes lots of caffeinated substances like coffee, tea and caffeinated energy drinks? Do you take coffee to keep awake at night? Well, there may be a need to do this in moderation as experts are drawing attention to the possibility of excess caffeine intake leading to hallucination in some individuals.

Researchers from the Durham University are warning that people with a higher caffeine intake, say about seven cups of instant coffee a day, are more likely to report hallucinatory experiences such as hearing voices and seeing things that are not there. This is the latest in mounting evidence indicating the amount of caffeine a person consumes may directly affect a person’s health.

In the study, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Medical Research Council, 200 students were asked about their typical intake of caffeine containing products, such as coffee, tea and energy drinks as well as chocolate bars and caffeine tablets. Their proneness to hallucinatory experiences and their stress levels were then assessed.
