He also reported that whenever there is a wound that leads to bleeding, the first thing to do is to remove all the near-by clothing to allow for proper application of treatment which should not be delayed. For example, the doctor advises that if there is a wound accompanied with a heavy bleeding, a thick pad of sterile gauze, or a clean handkerchief should be tied or wound over the bleeding spot, or bandage firmly. But for small wounds, such as cut or scratches, it advisable to clean the area thoroughly with soap and warm water first before applying any suitable disinfectant. After that, the wound can then be covered with a sterile gauze dressing and bandage carefully.

However, there are four main types of wounds, with each requiring different types of treatment.


• Incised wounds is another type of wound that should’nt be handled carelessly. These are deep cuts that could result from knife cut, broken glass, or razor blade cut. The wound bleeds freely because many blood vessels in the skin are usually affected or cut in the process. Some may be deep that would requires a few stitches to stop the bleeding. Once this happened, the first thing to do is to bandage the area firmly and take the injured person to hospital immediately. Do not try to treat this type of wound yourself, especially if the wound or the cut is large or deep.

• Laceration is another type of wound which can be caused by a blunt, sharp instrument, or by explosion. It could also happen if one falls against sharp edges. This types of wound can be dangerous if handled with kid gloves. The reason is that it can easily be infested with tetanus or other dangerous germs because dirts and germs are often grounded into the wound. “Although bleeding could be less severe, but there is more danger of infestation of micro-organisms if not well treated,” says Dr. Wale Oguntuase.

• Abrasions are caused by scraping of the skin, and these types of wounds are sustained when one falls down on a street. These are also called “brush burn” injuries and are always badly infected. However, when this happened, the best thing to do first is to clean the spot of the wound with soap and warm water, in order to remove all the dirt on the surface. After that, the injured spot can be covered with a sterile dressing or bandage carefully. Doing this according to doctors would to relive both pain and shock.
