Hallucination may be due to excessive coffee intake (page 2)

The researchers, whose paper was published in the academic journal, Personality and Individual Differences, said their finding could be down to the fact that caffeine has been found to aggravate the physiological effects of stress.

They explained that more cortisol, a stress hormone, was released in response to stress when people have recently had caffeine.

Although caffeine found in coffee, tea and chocolate can cause heart palpitations, there is patchy evidence of its relationship to psychotic behaviour such as schizophrenia. Also, previous research has highlighted that a number of important factors, such as childhood trauma may lead to hallucinations. Many of these childhood events like abuse or bereavement are thought to be linked to hallucinations in part because of their impact on the body’s reaction to stress.

Lead author, Simon Jones, a PhD student at Durham University’s Psychology Department, explained that given the link between food and mood, and particularly between caffeine and the body’s response to stress.

“It may be that those who have hallucinations have high levels of worry and anxiety and that leads them to consume more caffeine,” Jones said.
